Human-Relevant Toxicology Strategies for Confident Safety & Regulatory Decisions

In vitro methods can provide powerful insight into human exposure, biological response, and potential hazard. Their value, however, depends on choosing the right model, designing the study around a clearly defined question, and interpreting the findings within the wider scientific and regulatory context.

Roper Toxicology Consulting Limited (Roper TCL) provides expertise in dermal absorption, skin toxicology, and respiratory/inhalation toxicology, helping clients generate evidence that is relevant, reliable, and fit for purpose

Start with the Question, Not the Technology

The strongest testing strategy does not begin with a preferred model or method. It begins with the question to be answered and the decision the evidence must support.

What is the test article? Which route of exposure and biological response matter? Is the objective hazard identification, mechanistic understanding, product comparison, risk assessment, or regulatory support? What can the chosen method answer, and what are its limitations?

Clive Roper works with clients to define the scientific and regulatory context, evaluate the available evidence, and determine whether an established method is suitable, an existing approach should be adapted, or a new strategy is justified. This question-led approach helps remove unnecessary testing and directs resources toward evidence that can support a meaningful decision.

Areas of Specialist Expertise

Dermal Absorption
Roper TCL supports dermal absorption programs to understand how a substance moves through or is retained in the skin. From initial strategy to interpretation and regulatory communication, Clive helps clients connect study findings with realistic exposure and intended use.

Key Services

  • Study strategy and method selection based on the test article, formulation, exposure scenario, and intended use of the data

  • Protocol development or review

  • Identification and coordination of suitable laboratories and scientific partners

  • Review of study conduct, data quality, variability, and biological relevance

  • Interpretation of absorption, distribution within the skin, and exposure related findings

  • Investigation of unexpected, conflicting, or complicated results

  • Scientific review of reports and technical content used to support regulatory submissions

Skin Toxicology

The skin is both a route of exposure and a complex biological barrier. Roper TCL advises on in vitro approaches used to investigate skin irritation, sensitisation, barrier integrity, damage and recovery, and other biologically relevant responses. Recommendations are tailored to the endpoint, exposure conditions, product type, and decisions the study must support, across pharmaceuticals, chemicals, cosmetics, consumer products, occupational exposure, or topical formulations.

Respiratory and Inhalation Toxicology
Respiratory toxicology requires a clear understanding of both exposure and biological response. The form of the test article, route and duration of exposure, delivered dose, target region, model characteristics, and relevance to the human airway can all shape a study design and interpretation. Roper TCL provides scientific and strategic guidance for evaluating inhalation exposure and respiratory effects using established, advanced, and emerging in vitro approaches.

Key Services

  • Respiratory and inhalation testing strategy

  • Selection and evaluation of relevant airway or lung models

  • Exposure design, including the relationship between external exposure and delivered dose

  • Protocol and study plan review

  • Interpretation of mechanistic, functional, and toxicity related endpoints

  • Integration of in vitro findings with exposure information

  • Scientific rationale and report review for regulatory or product safety communication

Exposure Assessment and Human Relevance

A toxicological result should not be interpreted in isolation. Its meaning depends on how, where, and to what extent people may be exposed. Roper TCL helps clients relate experimental findings to realistic dermal, respiratory, occupational, consumer, and product use scenarios. This may include evaluating the relevance of study concentrations or doses, considering differences among models or species, interpreting local and systemic implications, and determining how each finding contributes to the broader weight of evidence.

Support Across the Study Lifecycle

Roper TCL can provide focused advice at a critical decision point or remain involved throughout a broader program, bringing independent scientific perspective grounded in decades of practical toxicology experience, including:

  • Strategic Definition. Clarify the scientific question, regulatory objective, exposure route, context of use, endpoints, and evidence needs

  • Method Selection and/or Development. Determine whether an established model is fit for purpose or whether an adapted or new approach is required

  • Study Design and Oversight. Develop or review protocols, identify suitable partners, and provide independent scientific oversight

  • Evidence Interpretation. Assess data quality, variability, biological relevance, limitations, and the relationship with other findings

  • Conclusion Communication. Strengthening reports, regulatory responses, technical discussions, and communication for scientific and non-scientific audiences

When Independent Specialist Support Can Help

Roper TCL can bring clarity and momentum when:

  • An established test does not fully address the scientific question

  • A strategy, protocol, or emerging technology requires independent technical review

  • Findings are unexpected, conflicting, or difficult to interpret

  • The human relevance of a result is uncertain

  • Exposure, mechanistic, and toxicological evidence must be integrated

  • A complex conclusion must be communicated clearly for a regulatory, product safety, or business decision
